June, July & August in Ségur
The Tourist Office is moving! Last summer it was in the old school buildings but work has been going on at a pace during the autumn and winter to alter the layout inside the Mairie, next to the Auberge Henri IV, and the new office is hoped to be open in the summer this year. The following events are provisional but should prove to be correct. I will update with any changes or further information as I get it but you can always check by phoning the Tourist Office to be sure. Tel: 05 55 73 39 92.
June
20th
Collector's Fair. New for 2010. Are you looking for that rare book, map, stamp or coin? You might just find it at this event.
Open from 9am to 5.30pm in the Salle Polyvalente, up the hill on the road to Lubersac. Stalls can be reserved via the Tourist Office.
July
5th to 30th August.
Farmer's Market. Every Monday in July and August. Starts at 5pm and goes on until about 11pm. Great range of local produce on sale. Including trout from just up the road, barbecued for you or sold fresh. The village run a barbecue, so you can buy your meat and we'll cook it for you. Stalls selling everything needed for a good night. Live entertainment (most nights), tables and seating for 5 or 600. The three eating places are all open and ready to serve you. A night not to be missed. Get there early as parking gets tricky later.
14th
Fishing Contest in waters around the chateau. 8am. Results around midday with a drink to celebrate.
Petanque contest. Meet on the Foirail to register at about 2pm. Matches go on all afternoon.
Pompadour. During the day, on the racecourse is the annual Donkey Festival. In the evening there is a firework display on the terraces of the chateau and viewing from the racecourse. It is spectacular, lasts around 30 to 40 minutes and starts about 10pm ish.
21st
Torchlight Tour of the village. Gather at the Foirail for a 9.00pm start. The tour is €3 but under 12 year olds are free. The evening covers the history of the village and lasts about 2 to 3 hours and rambles over 3 to 4km. Good shoes for walking are a must.
21st July to 15th August
Medieval Family Game. I think I've got this right. From Tuesday to Sunday each week during the above dates. From 2pm to 6pm there will be people around the village in medieval costume. The task of the visitors is to find the answers to questions about the tales and legends of the area by asking these actors for help. Sounds like great fun - whether any of them speak English I know not.
Details and registration via the Tourist Office
23rd
Jazz Concert. In it's 11th year, it gets more popular every year so booking is advisable. This year the concerts will be held in the church and tables and chairs will be set up all around. The evening starts at 6.30pm with aperitifs and hot and cold food is available from 7.00pm. Musical entertainment outside while you eat and the concert, by a second group starts at 9.15pm. The Friday night's two performers are: LORENEY'N SUGAR STRINGS QUARTET (classic blues music of the 50s) & JULIEN BRUNETAUD TRIO (blues and swing music)
24th
Jazz Concert. Timings and details as above but music this evening is by two different groups who are: THE BLACK X TET QUINTET (talented young musicians playing classic jazz from the 30s to 50s) & SOUL VOICES (4 fabulous singers from Africa, USA, Cape Verde and Martinique enriched with great instruments - A journey through Gospel)
Tickets for either evening are €15 or you can get a double ticket for both nights at €14 per concert. Children under 12 years are free. Food ranges from €1 to €5 and is produced in the village. Of course there is a bar!! Parking is free.
Organised by the "Jazz in Segur Association".
Reservations, highly recommended, by the 1st July. Can be made at our Tourist Office or those in Lubersac, Pompadour or St. Yrieix la Perche.
August
1st
Cul Noir Pig Festival. A truly French event. Celebration of the local pig (literally translates as the Black Bum Pig). Much enjoyed for it's superb flavour. In the morning there are pens with piglets and sows, boars and young pigs. Prizes are awarded later in the day for the best. Overnight 4 or 5 pigs are spit-roasted ready to serve to a host of visitors to the event. Starts about 9am and food is supposed to start at 1.00pm (but it's usually late!!). The meal is 4 courses and includes wine and there is entertainment for the whole day. I think the charge is about €25 per person.
Reservations can be made by phone to Association des Culs Noirs on 05 55 73 52 87 (you pay on arrival on the day).
4th
Torchlight Tour of the village. Details as above for the 21st July.
8th
Vide Grenier (Car Boot Sale) As the inclement weather caused problems getting vehicles in and out of the steep chateau grounds last year, the venue this year will be the streets and places around the heart of the village. From 8am to 6pm. Parking may be a bit more tricky than previous years.
Stalls can be reserved via the Tourist Office.
15th
Painters in the Street. Open to all ages and all capabilities. Registration from 9am. The subject for the day's painting is announced at registration. All media are allowed. Entrants can display 5 pieces of work for sale in the marquee on the Foirail for the day. You can do as many works as you wish on the day but only one can be entered for judging at 5pm. First prize €200 and your work is exhibited in the Tourist Office. Great fun and no need to feel you are not good enough, all are welcome especially budding youngsters who have their own section.
If plans work out there will be some form of buffet between the day's two events. So anyone attending both will not starve - though there is always the Auberge Henri IV, Les Parts des Anges or the Cafe Vert Gallant to eat in.
Concert. This year the free instrumental concert will be given by the FAVA Ensemble Instrumental. The programme for the evening is not yet decided but I have little doubt it will be as good as last year.
To be held in the Eglise Saint-Leger di Baillargeau. To be found up the hill on the road towards Lubersac. Starts around 8.30pm. Entry Free.
22nd
Grand Walking Tour. A new event for 2010. An organised walk around the village and the nearby area, of between 7 and 10km. Good walking shoes would be a good idea! There will be lots of entertainment en route including games for the younger walkers. Places can be reserved via the Tourist Office. Gather at the Champ de Foire at 9.30am.
30th
Last Farmer's Market of the summer. Details as above.
For more information and reservations on all the events please phone the Tourist Office on 05 55 73 39 92 or Fax on 05 55 98 73 86.
